The benefits of singing medicine songs in a circle

Medicine songs are songs sung in a circle with an intention: to give thanks, to ask, to heal or to celebrate. Some come from Indigenous traditions of the Americas, others from cultures around the world, and others are born today, in community. What makes them “medicine” is not the lyrics alone, but the act of singing them together.

What happens in the body when we sing

Singing lengthens the exhale, and a long exhale helps the nervous system come out of alert mode. The vibration of the voice is felt in the chest, throat and face, which is why so many people describe a sense of calm and warmth after singing.

When we sing as a group, breathing and rhythm tend to fall into sync. It is a very old and very human experience: feeling part of something larger.

Benefits we see in our circles

  • Calm and presence. While singing, the mind is busy with rhythm and melody, and inner noise quiets down.
  • Reclaiming your voice. Many people arrive saying “I don’t sing”. In the circle they discover their voice belongs.
  • Emotional expression. Song lets out emotions that don’t always have words.
  • Community. Singing together builds trust and belonging, which is why our circle ends with a shared meal.
  • Joy. Simply put, singing together feels good.

What a song circle is like

We sit in a circle with drums and guitar. We teach each song in parts, repeat it until everyone has it, and then let it grow. There is room for poetry, for silence, and for anyone to share a song.

In Nosara we hold a free, open, monthly community medicine song circle. If you are drawn to movement, join us for the Dances of Universal Peace. And to hear our songs, visit the music page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be able to sing to join a song circle?
